Pricing and Cost
How much does vehicle recovery cost in Fife?
Recovery prices in Fife typically range from around £60 for a short local job up to £150 or more for longer distances or out-of-hours call-outs in difficult conditions. There's no single industry rate. Distance, time of day, type of recovery, and how long the job takes all affect the price. GTT gives you a clear quote before coming out, so you know what you're paying before anyone leaves.
How much does it cost to tow a car 10 miles in the UK?
For a straightforward local recovery of around 10 miles, expect to pay in the region of £70 to £100 depending on when you call and the nature of the job. Daytime, uncomplicated recoveries tend to be at the lower end. Late-night call-outs or vehicles that are difficult to load (accident damage, stuck in a ditch, awkward parking) will cost more. GTT will give you an honest estimate over the phone before committing to the job.
Is there a call-out fee?
GTT charges for the job, not a separate call-out fee on top of it. When you ring for a quote, you'll get a single price that covers coming to you and completing the recovery. No hidden charges added afterwards. Ring 07456 534488 to get a quote for your specific situation.
How much will I get for my scrap car?
Scrap prices change regularly and depend on the weight of the vehicle, current scrap metal rates, and its condition. GTT collects end-of-life vehicles across Fife. Ring 07456 534488 and we'll give you a straightforward offer based on what you have.
Service and Process
How quickly can you get to me?
For most of central Fife, including Dunfermline, Kirkcaldy, Cowdenbeath, and the surrounding towns, GTT can typically reach you within 30 to 45 minutes. For areas further out, you'll get a realistic estimate when you call, not an optimistic one that ends up being an hour and a half. If there's already a job on, Graham will tell you.
Do you operate 24/7?
Yes. The phone is on 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including bank holidays. If you call at 3am on a Sunday, someone answers. Breakdowns don't follow business hours and GTT doesn't either.
What happens after you recover my vehicle?
Once the vehicle is loaded and secured, it goes wherever you direct. That might be your home, a garage of your choice, a dealership, or a bodyshop. GTT doesn't decide where your vehicle ends up. You do. If you're unsure which garage to use and want a recommendation for your area, Graham can usually point you in the right direction.
Where do you take the recovered vehicle?
Wherever you want it to go within a reasonable distance. GTT is not tied to any particular garage or dealership and does not receive referral fees for dropping vehicles anywhere specific. Your vehicle goes where you tell us. Ring 07456 534488 to discuss your situation.
Can I choose which garage you take my car to?
Yes, absolutely. You choose the garage, we deliver the vehicle. If your preferred garage is outside our normal coverage area, we'll let you know the cost up front and you can decide whether it's worth it.
Vehicle Types
Can you recover automatic cars?
Yes, and flatbed recovery is actually the correct method for automatic vehicles. Towing an automatic with the driven wheels on the road and the engine off can circulate transmission fluid without the pump running, which causes internal damage. On GTT's flatbed, all four wheels are off the ground for the entire journey. No risk to the gearbox.
Do you recover vans and light commercial vehicles?
Yes. GTT's Renault Master flatbed handles cars, estates, MPVs, and light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes. That covers most transit-style vans, light commercials, and the majority of everyday working vehicles. If you're unsure whether your vehicle is within that limit, ring 07456 534488 and we'll confirm.
Can you recover vehicles with no MOT?
Yes. A vehicle without a current MOT can still be recovered and transported. In fact, collecting a failed MOT from a test centre and taking it straight to a garage for remedial work is a common job. The vehicle is loaded onto the flatbed and transported without being driven, so there's no issue with its test status.
What's the maximum weight you can recover?
GTT's current flatbed handles vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes. That covers most standard cars, people carriers, and light commercial vehicles. Heavier vehicles such as large vans, minibuses, and HGVs are outside that capacity for now. Graham is working towards his Class 2 and Class 1 HGV licence later in 2026, which will expand what GTT can handle. If you're unsure whether your vehicle is within the current limit, ring 07456 534488.
Coverage
What areas do you cover?
GTT is based in Cowdenbeath and covers all of Fife and Central Scotland. Regular areas include Dunfermline, Kirkcaldy, Glenrothes, Rosyth, Inverkeithing, Lochgelly, Kelty, Kinross, Alloa, and Livingston. Edinburgh is also covered. If you're outside these areas, ring 07456 534488 and we'll let you know whether we can get to you and what it would cost.
Do you cover Edinburgh?
Yes. Edinburgh and the surrounding area is within GTT's coverage. The Forth Road Bridge and Queensferry Crossing put Edinburgh within straightforward reach from Cowdenbeath. Jobs in the city and on the main commuter routes are regularly handled. Ring 07456 534488 for a quote specific to your location.
Can you collect a vehicle from an auction?
Yes. GTT handles auction and private sale vehicle collections across Fife, Edinburgh, and Central Scotland. If you've bought a vehicle and need it collected from an auction house, dealership, or private address and delivered to your home or storage, ring 07456 534488 and we'll sort it.
Comparison with Breakdown Cover
What's the difference between GTT and breakdown cover like the AA?
The AA and RAC are subscription services. You pay an annual fee whether you break down or not, and in exchange you get call-outs included (or heavily subsidised) across the UK. GTT is pay-per-use. There's no membership, no annual direct debit, and no renewal. You ring when you need help, we give you a price, you decide whether to go ahead. You pay for that one job and nothing else.
If you break down once every five years, a subscription service means you've paid five years of fees for one call-out. Pay-per-use makes more financial sense for most people who don't break down regularly.
The main advantage of a subscription service is national coverage and the peace of mind on long trips. GTT covers Fife and Central Scotland, not the whole country. For local situations, one-off recoveries, vehicle collections, and transport jobs, GTT is typically faster, cheaper, and more straightforward than going through a subscription service.
Do I need breakdown cover if I use GTT?
Not for local driving in Fife and Central Scotland. If you mostly drive locally and want the option to ring a recovery service when you need one without paying for it all year, GTT is a reasonable alternative to holding a standalone breakdown policy. If you drive frequently on long motorway journeys or travel nationally, a full breakdown policy with national coverage is worth having alongside a local service like GTT. The two aren't mutually exclusive.
Practical Advice
What should I do if I break down on the motorway?
Get off the road if you can. If not, pull as far left onto the hard shoulder as possible. Turn on your hazard lights immediately. If it's safe to do so, get out of the vehicle via the nearside doors (away from traffic) and wait behind the barrier. Do not sit in a stationary vehicle on the hard shoulder if you can avoid it. Ring GTT on 07456 534488 with your location, including the road number and the nearest marker post number (these are small orange signs on the barrier at regular intervals). We'll give you an honest ETA and advise on next steps.
Can you jump start my car?
Yes. GTT carries jump start equipment. If a flat battery is your only problem and you're within our area, a jump start is often quicker and cheaper than a full recovery. Ring 07456 534488 and describe the situation. If a jump start is the right option, we'll tell you. If the car needs more than that, we'll be honest about it.
